As Hurricane Earl churned toward the Caribbean then turned northward I though of the thousands of Haitians living under tarps ad scraps salvaged from the January 12, 2010 earthquake that killed over 250,000. Mission Discovery had an immediate impact with victims because of our ground operations there through HOLD the Children, our child advocacy ministry division. Immediately following the earthquake, friends and supporters responded with monetary gifts of more than $150k that was distributed through local churches in Port-au-Prince to meet the physical needs of the most needy.

So you are a pastor thinking about taking a group of adults on a mission trip?

Years ago we started receiving calls from the parents of students who were going on our summer mission trips requesting permission to go along with their children. We always said they were welcome to come along but the final decision was up to their youth-trip-leader. We discovered that after returning home, the high school and middle school students described a summer mission trip experience that adults want to experience for themselves!

Nati stood on a hill in the African village of Melanda, Swaziland addressing a Mission Discovery team after they completed a playground for the children of the community. Surrounding us were the simple mud-huts typical of this region of Africa. “This is Mission Discovery’s second year to come back to my village,” Nati said. Nati leads tours of his home village and the nearby town of Bulembu.

Work day #1 is complete and God is already started to do amazing things. We have 3 great churches and they are building 5 houses total. Today they all started work on their houses and got to know their families a little bit. We went out and did a little VBS canvassing for tomorrow and hopefully it pays off and we have a ton on kids there. I’m a little nervous about being VBS coordinator this week, but know that it’s what God wants from me at this moment. And what could be a bigger blessing than getting to hang out with a bunch of kids and teach them about God’s love?

Officially en route to Tecate! It was a bit of a rough start this morning. I woke up to find my face was puffy, itchy, and red. For some odd reason, we had no benadryl or any type of allergy relief medicine in my house at all so on the way to the airport we had to stop at Walgreens to pick some up. I get to the airport right on time (or so I thought) at 4:30 for my 6:30am flight. I get up to curbside check-in and find that there is no 6:30 am flight to San Diego. I looked back at my confirmation e-mail from Delta and the Sky Cap was right….I didn’t leave until 7:45am.

It happens occasionally that someone I am talking with will look at me in such a way that it’s like they are looking into my heart. Most often it’s with Ann or my men’s group who know me well.

Last week a Corey stood to talk about what he was taking home with him after having served in Westmoreland, TN on a Mission Discovery trip there. He had been serving at Rick Henson’s house with his youth group from Argyle United Methodist Church. Rick and his family was one of hundreds of families whose home was flooded in here in Middle Tennessee 6 weeks ago.
