On November 10th last year, our team of 25 people was ready to depart on our annual trip to visit the Christian Alliance School in Cap Haitien, Haiti. In just two days we would be with our Haitian friends. Then word came that serious flooding was occurring in Cap and the forecast was for torrential rain to continue for several more days. The roads in Cap were impassible and the airline cancelled flights. We had to postpone our trip. Pastor Bazile, our host in Cap Haitien, had arrived several days earlier and was now in the middle of a serious disaster. Homes and possessions were washi

I am writing this update from the Habitation Hatt Hotel in Port au Prince, Haiti. We are preparing to leave on the eight hours bus ride to Port de Paix, which is where much of the HOLD the Children work is located. From inside the walls of this hotel, all appears tranquil and content. The cloudless sky is as blue as the eye can imagine. The beauty of Haiti is hiding the reality of the world outside. This will change when we join the chaos on the outside. Enormous congestion and terrible roads make the 120 mile journey to Port de Paix an endurance test. Though I’ve made this trip doze

We are right in the middle of our pre-trip training at Mission Discovery! Mission trip team preparation is essential for anyone heading out on a summer mission trip. We are almost sure that a team will do lots of research about the destination, the people and their culture. But we discover an often overlooked area of mission team preparation. Every group who participates in a mission trip with Mission Discovery prepares a Team Covenant. The Team Covenant is a bit like a contract.

“What can I do,” I asked. The building supervisor placed a bowl of rice and chicken in my hand and said, “Follow me.” Off a side room of Building Number 5 was Shantoy…severely disabled, about 19 years old, attached to a catheter, and unable to speak or feed herself. “Feed her, and give her this bottle.” Shantoy was propped on a pillow lying against a bed rail. The worker walked away.

The week before Hurricane Matthew, I stood with Pastor Noel in the community of Onaville dreaming about the location for their next church build…church number six. Onaville is a resettlement community for victims displaced in the earthquake of 2010.

*This article was written by one of our recent mission trip participants with permission to share. "I came to Haiti for the first time a little over a year ago. I was in several unhealthy relationships and didn't even know it. I was broken. I was looking for something, but I didn't know what. A few days into my trip, I finally realized just how broken I really was. I realized how desperate for the Father I was. I spent that night crying in the prayer room that God would save me from those relationships, that He would heal the pain.

*This article was written by Kellie Doyle, HOLD Sponsor and Supporter. “I love to travel and our 20 year wedding anniversary was coming up. For our 10 year anniversary we took a trip and learned to scuba dive. My husband is creative, knows me so well, and is great at surprises. So I waited with great expectation to see what he had planned for our 20th.

Written by Valerie from Somerset, Pennsylvania. Her group joined us for our annual Tecate, Mexico cut-out trip that kicks off each summer. "My team recently partnered with Mission Discovery in Tecate, Mexico for an incredible experience! We arrived Sunday evening full of excitement and anticipating all that God was going to do during our stay. We knew that our main purpose in Tecate was to pour concrete foundations for eight future homes, but we also knew that the Lord was going to work in ways we couldn’t even imagine.

God continues to bless the work at the HOLD the Children Home in Haiti. It seems like it was just yesterday that we stood on the roof of the Orphanage. Our vision was to have a place where we could prepare the older kids for the day when they would leave the orphanage. We dreamed of building transitional homes where they could learn to live as a family and be taught vocational skills. They would learn to speak English and use a computer as preparation for life on their own.

From Maury Buchanan: "Today I received this from Paige Wilson a past intern on a Mexico mission trip with Mission Discovery." Meet my husband, aka Kentucky Boy. The first time we spoke was over a table of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. It was like the Lord was laughing as He thought about our future family and how many conversations we would have as we spread peanut butter.

In July 2013, I caught this picture of Joel Cox taking a moment to soak in the beauty of Bulembu, Swaziland. Bulembu cares for over 500 orphans and each year the ministry that owns the town invites Mission Discovery teams to experience and work in the town whose theme is “Restore a town, Change a nation!”

I don’t know about you, but sometimes what ifs hold me back. When faced with a decision, or even an exciting and God-honoring opportunity, there are always endless amounts of possibilities to consider. I recently shared some fears/what ifs with a friend about pursuing a specific opportunity and somehow missing out on something else that God has for me by following through with said opportunity.

Thanks to all who made our 2016 Golf Challenge a success! We had 8 teams participate in the tournament. We played 9 holes of speed golf at Bluegrass Country Club in Hendersonville and our winning team got the fastest time by less than a few seconds. With your help and fundraising efforts we were able to raise over $32,000 for Mission Discovery!

What an exciting week we had! Last week we had a team of 19 participants with us visiting the HOLD Home in Lavaud, Haiti. It was so exciting to see the progress that has been made since last April! We’ve been updating along the way, but it was neat to see the new kitchen and storage area in person.

We recently spent a week in Nassau, Bahamas with some lovely folks. We served in one of the largest public schools in the area. Sadie Curtis Primary School has almost 1,000 students in attendance and every single one of them got to hear the Gospel during our week there.

I was incredibly skeptical when Mission Discovery was invited to Las Vegas to explore mission trip opportunities. Sure it is possible to find need in any area, but what could we possibly do in Las Vegas? After all this is the place that's known as “Sin City,” and has coined the phrase “what happens in Vegas stays there.” Why would Mission Discovery want to lead short-term mission trips to Las Vegas?

Have you ever helped out with an exciting event? There are three elements that happen. First is the lead up and preparation. Second is the execution of the event. And third is the clean up. Of those, which do people want to be a part of?
