Mission Discovery News: Trip Prep

Over 2 million individuals will go on a short term mission trip in 2012. Many of those who go will simply be able to write the check for the trip, but others will be a part of individual and organized fundraising events to shore up the money to serve.

Since 1975 I have been raising my personal support. Here at Mission Discovery each staff member is asked to raise a portion of the funds needed to supply their annual salary.

New to Mission Discovery trip planning is a new surge of Spring and Summer mission trips for Christian high school groups. I just returned on a trip to Arizona where I spent time with students and staff at a school committed to missional thinking.

So you've made the decision, the church is on-board, and you are ready to take the youth group on an international summer mission trip. Now what?

A one-week mission trip in June or July really starts weeks, even months before you arrive on the filed. Every Mission Discovery trip leader is encouraged to attend a webinar or weekend event we call Pre-Field Orientation (PFO). When that training is complete the team leader has tools to prepare the team for the best possible international mission trip!

“I’m a youth leader who takes teams on mission trips each summer. How do I have new content each year that is different enough not to loose the interest of those who have been before.”

Good question. It is a challenge for a leader who consistently leads teams from his church to have current, relevant prep material. Here are some thoughts that might help.

The 2011 Mission Discovery Golf Challenge is set for September 29th here in Nashville, but now you can play right where you are! This year's event will take place at Hermitage Golf Course with over 60 players "golfing like they are on a mission"....and they really are! Swinging a golf club in Nashville, Tennessee and impacting the needs of people a world away is what happens that day!

           Just wanted to give some updated information about our Kenya trip and the HOLD the Children status. We will have two weeks of projects in Kenya this summer and both are still available if you want to join us.  We’ll be their July 14 – 24 and July 27 – Aug 6. We will be working and ministering on Mfangano Island and will be working with Pastor Joshua.

What are the three key elements of being an effective mission trip team? These three key elements I learned long ago from Tim Gibson my friend at World Servants. Very simply here they are. On a Mission Discovery mission trip we ask every team member to come as 1) Learners, 2) Servants, and 3) Story Tellers. In these three headings every aspect of a mission trip experience is covered.
