Yesterday was another education here in Guatemala. Preparing for a the arrival of a group that will be here in a few weeks took us to Casa Jackson and an meeting with a young lady in her 20's named Andrea. She's one of the staff who oversees a program of bringing life back to babies here. Literally life!

My dad had just graduated from law school in Jackson, Mississippi. I'm sure he didn't have a lot of money. It's hard to know whether I really remember things as a 4 year old or have created the images from stories told over and over. I just remember going to a store front where a model train circled in the store window. My dad was asking me questions about the train. Then the next thing I know, on Christmas morning, I had one....a Lionel model train! It was all so cool the coal car, the caboose and the powerful engine with a head light.

Today is a special day. Today "Help Portrait" Day. Where photographers from all over the world are giving their time to serve the needy, single moms, and those who have never had a professional portrait. I was founded by Jeremy Cowart, some of you who have been on Mission Discovery mission trips know his brother Mike Cowart (himself an awesome photographer) who has led worship for us for many years.

Years ago Ann and I were working for Youth for Christ. At the time we were raising our financial support and it was not going so well, behind in pay, and struggling. We were convinced that God would care for us. For several weeks, we received a cashiers check in our mail book for $500.00. We had no idea who it was from. We just thanked God for that person and asked God to continue to bless their life.

For many years the border towns of Reynosa, Tecate and Juarez have been the largest of Mission Discovery mission trips. In these three towns Mission Discovery teams have built over 1700 homes for the poor and seen thousands trust Christ through our adult and childrens' outreaches.

If the word “investigate” is used within the first few minutes of a television show, I am hooked. It’s a set up for a good story. It’s even better if while an investigation is going on the investigator has to overcome obstacles.

Do you have those occasions when you know you are in over your head? I’ve been a youth worker since 1973, and for 4 of those years I was a youth pastor. In the church I worked we had a licensed therapist on staff that I could pass off the individuals who I knew I couldn’t help. But sometimes I only knew I was in to deep after it was too late. That was the case with Ron, a senior high student and his dad Phil, a 45-year-old alcoholic and former lineman in the NFL.
