Deep in the hills of Jamaica, just past Eden where Mission Discovery has spent many years working with a school for deaf children, is another facility that highlights the beauty of the Island. When we think of Jamaica’s beauty, we may think of palm trees and bamboo that could almost pierce the sky. Or beaches on beaches on beaches filled with the clearest blue water imaginable. But I’ve come to find beauty in the hills, where the water is a bit unclear – and actually murky.

If I was asked to teach math to a first grader, my knees would start trembling and sweat would pour from my forehead. I am that bad at math. If my phone had no calculator, I would invest in one of those Marty McFly wrist watches. Even the simplest calculations become stressful as digits make their way through my brain waves. Now, imagine being asked to jump in and teach math to a classroom full of deaf students. I would melt.

If you visit the Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf, the first thing you will probably notice is how peaceful it is. There is something about the property nestled in the Jamaican countryside that gives a sense of tranquility. The second thing you will notice is that the school is growing. Right now, there are multiple buildings in different states of construction. The JCSD has dreams. They want to have a large meeting room that can hold all 37 students.

Sometimes we struggle to see God. We ask where He is, and why He doesn’t show up when we need Him. Other times we see Him in just about everything. All of creation is screaming, “HERE I AM!”

I usually stand back and watch the children at the “Deaf School” play soccer, but this time I jumped in.

“Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” – Mother Theresa
There is redemption in a smile! Last month, Montego Bay was blessed with free dental care from Mission Discovery’s dental team out of Pennsylvania. In one week they relieved the pain of over 100 people, and brightened the busy streets with beautiful new smiles!

Attention Youth Pastors! Before you leave for your Christmas vacation (and we know, you’ve earned a break) we’d like to encourage you to make a plan to get a head start on next year’s mission trips. Planning now will give your group the pick of Mission Discovery’s 2014 trips, and allow participants time to start budgeting, saving and even asking for funding as Christmas gifts.

When Mission Discovery was founded in 1991 there were only a few of us short-term-mission-types to choose from. Today there are so may great agencies who've formed to mobilize the passionate youth and adult groups ready to explore what God is doing in the world through short term missions.
How do you choose from the list of so many opportunities. Not in any particular order, but you have to consider prayer, counsel from others and the passion of your group as real starting points.

If you are a leader of a group taking a mission trip somewhere in the world this year you are no doubt aware that mission trips can bring do both harm and good. Here are a few ideas, 3 to be exact, that lead to well-done mission trips.
First of all, before you go, realize that God has already gone ahead of you. That correct, you are probably not taking Jesus to the place where you are going....He's already there!

Corey had worked hard for three straight days on our churches mission trip to the Bahamas. After a day at All Saints Camp, a hospice for the disabled and dying, he was focused even more intently on making sure he stayed busy. I've seen this before. A normally bubbly kid, full of personality over the course of a few days on a mission trip shut down. "If only I had caught it sooner," I thought.

While in Jamaica with our first-ever women’s missions trip (a tremendous experience!), we stopped at a grocery for supplies. Several of our team members struck up a conversation with Donavan, a 20 year-old store clerk. They discovered that he had grown up at the very orphanage that they were in Montego Bay to serve.

I had the great opportunity to lead groups in Montego Bay this past March. What a life changing trip for all of us. We served at Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf and at Blossom Garden Children's Home. In Eden, at Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf, we had the chance to mix lots of cement and at Blossom Garden we held babies and played with children. Many of the students that came down to serve on the trip had expressed a desire to renew their relationship with Jesus. Seems like many folks were at the same point in their walk.

The beauty of a single Mission Discovery trip that few know about is this: Over a thousand donors help to underwrite each participant fee. Since our beginning in 1991 Mission Discovery donors have come alongside each participant with the dollars needed to make our mission trips possible.
Simply, this means two things. One, that the trip price paid by someone who goes on a Mission Discovery trip is lower and that every participant is backed by the prayer of that supporter!

Travel off the paved roads to where tourist don't go to the community of Eden, Jamaica. There your high school or college mission trip team will join in the work of the Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf. Tucked against the hills and tropical forest 40 children make their home and learn in an environment of Christ-centered care.

Near the city of Montego Bay, your mission team will work at one of several ministry sites. The Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf is located just outside of Montego Bay in the tiny community of Eden. There 36 deaf children make this their home and school. Each year the tasks vary, but backed with a powerful vision to change the deaf community your team will work hard laying block, carrying sand, and mixing concrete, leading children's bible school and teaching classes for the deaf.
