Often times, I’ll be on social media and see that people are raising money to go on a mission trip or are preparing to go on one soon. It seems to be a big part of the Christian lifestyle, but if you’ve never been on a Christ centered mission trip you may not understand what they are or why people go on them. So, why go on a Christ centered mission trip you ask? Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about this to see why Christ centered mission trips are important in the ministry of Christ.

The Great Commission Commands Us to Spread the Good News

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28:19-20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus directly tells us to go. Going means going to your family, friends, neighbors, strangers, and to the ends of the earth. A Christ centered mission trip can look like sharing your testimony with a friend over dinner or building a water well in for a community in another country. Glorifying Christ and magnifying His name is what a Christ centered mission trip is in its rawest essence.

The Holy Spirit Works Through Us

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

We are not alone when we go to the ends of the earth. The Holy Spirit is always within us and works through us. Our strength, boldness, words, and compassion come straight from the Holy Spirit while on a Christ centered mission trip. It is not us working in the lives of the people we come into contact with, rather it is Him working. He works in our lives too as we reach out to others, making this time even more special.

The Purpose is to Make His Name Known!

“For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” Acts 13:47

The purpose of a Christ centered mission trip is to help lead others to Christ. It’s not about us or our own desires, rather bringing people to the feet of God and helping them recognize their desperate need of Him. We do this by serving others as Christ did while on earth. We talk to others; we rebuild their houses; we provide them with food; we befriend them. Through this we magnify His name rather than our own, and we ask God to move in their lives as well as our own. Salvation is our one true goal on a Christ centered mission trip.

This is why we go. This is the purpose of the Gospel. We would love to serve with you on your next mission trip.
