New to Mission Discovery trip planning is a new surge of Spring and Summer mission trips for Christian high school groups. I just returned on a trip to Arizona where I spent time with students and staff at a school committed to missional thinking.

The team of 42 made up of freshmen through seniors are headed to Guatemala in just a few weeks. There, Mission Discovery is connecting the team to three local Guatemala schools, a children’s hydration clinic and another ministry that works with street children. The 42 is part of over 220 from the same school serving all over the world during their Spring break period.

“It’s a vital part of preparing a student for his or her future,” says Brad a teacher and team leader. “We know it’s important to go outside of our comfort zone, see God’s work in another culture.” Brad’s team will repeat a well received street drama team performance during their trip this year.

A good part of the boy’s basketball team and their coach will be on the trip to Guatemala, so we’ve lined up a couple of games with other schools near Antigua.

Along with drama, basketball and working with street children in an organized tutoring program, the group will distribute Eco Water Filters to families of children they lead in a VBS at Karos School. With any free time the team will do small construction projects that include installing safe, efficient cooking stoves in the homes of families of children from Karos School as well

“We like that we can have a ministry idea as the trip is in progress and Mission Discovery staff press hard to make an idea happen,” says Brad.

We’ve discovered that the “learner, servant, story teller” model of the Mission Discovery short term mission trip experience works well for Christian schools looking to view mission trips as both outreach and education. “We know too, that when we depart that those who have trusted Christ there are in good hands with Mission Discovery’s partners in ministry.”
