The director of our city’s Youth for Christ program came by my office one day to drop something off.  Witt, the YFC guy, could see I was busy, but he shouted hello through the open door and asked a question that changed my life that day.  Here’s the question, “Hey Maury, do you want to talk to me later about going to Guatemala next summer?”

How quickly can one question or one choice change the direction of a life?  That was in 1975 and today I am the President of Mission Discovery.  I have helped send young men and women all over the world on mission trips like the one I said “yes” to, after a meeting with Witt, the YFC guy!

Peter Sims, is the author of “Little Bets: How Breakthrough Ideas Emerge from Small Discoveries.”  In his book he talks about how a big idea rarely starts with everything planned out in advance.  Big ideas are often shaped by a methodical series of little bets or decisions about what might be a good direction.  Learning from lots of little failures and small wins, helps find unexpected strategies and tactics that can lead to a big and extraordinary impact.  I like this kind of thinking.  Under God’s direction there are no bets just investments, but the idea is the same.  Our small investments, successes, and failures can help propel us to a greater goal.

Do you have a Big Idea?  Something you feel God is call you to?  Does the idea seem so massive that you don’t know where to start?

Here’s is today’s challenge.  What one small decision can you make today to get you closer to your “Big Idea?”  If your “Big Idea” is, for example, to be a missionary in Africa, one of those small steps could be simply telling a friend.  Step two could be when you get home to buy a book about Africa and read a little each day for 30 days.  Take a little step to your big idea today!

Ok, one more thing.  Are you ready to take a small step towards your Big Idea?  Will you make this commitment?  If in your mind you said YES, count to 3 and shout the word “YES” Ready… 1, 2, 3 —-YES!

Now go enjoy the day!
