Read Luke 14:25-33

Popular question! Everything costs something! How many times do we go to the mall and window shop? We dream about having enough money to get all the latest iPods, cell phones, clothes, or sneakers. But holding us back is the reality that the cost is too great.

Even in God’s kingdom things cost. Salvation is free (and man are we thankful for that!) but discipleship cost. Jesus says in Luke 14, “Simply put, if you’re not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and kiss it good-bye, you can’t be my disciple.” Pretty difficult words aren’t they? Or are they? Many times in decision-making some questions are asked to help us make a better decision, “Does the benefit outweigh the cost?” or “What will it cost us if we don’t make this decision?” If you apply these two questions to Jesus statement they begin to shed a different light on it.

Sometimes the cost seems too great because we think we can do better. Remember back to the Garden of Eden. Eve thought God was holding out on her. She wanted to be like God, she wanted to be the director of her destiny. She asked, “Does God REALLY know what’s best for me?”

Does God really know what’s best for you? Who will rule and reign in your life? Who is the ultimate authority in your life? Before you answer any of these questions read Luke 18:24-29. See if God doesn’t have a better plan for your life.
